A leading and innovative name in Turkey’s chrome mining sector
Akmetal Mining is one of the most established and influential players in Turkey’s chrome mining industry, carrying decades of accumulated know-how. Operating primarily in the Aladağ region of Adana, the company has played a critical role in the development and modernization of chrome mining in the country, shaping the sector’s standards and long-term outlook.
Through continuous investment and modernization, the company has strengthened its operations with a powerful capital structure and fully renewed machinery fleet. The commissioning of the 1,100,000 tons/year Aladağ–Kumbükü Chrome Processing Plant in 2009 marks one of the most significant milestones in Akmetal’s modernization journey.
Combining large-scale open-pit mining with selective underground operations, Akmetal currently reaches an annual production capacity of approximately 40,000 tons of high-grade chrome ore (42–52% Cr2O3). Four major concentration plants dedicated to processing low-grade ores allow the company to process nearly 2 million tons of run-of-mine ore per year, achieving an impressive 240,000 tons/year chrome concentrate capacity.
This extensive operation is supported by rich reserves, modern processing infrastructure, large-scale machinery and haulage fleets owned directly by the company, as well as a highly skilled team of engineers, supervisors and technical specialists. Together, they form the foundation of Akmetal’s long-term, sustainable success in chrome mining.
As one of Turkey’s most capable chrome producers, Akmetal combines large reserve potential, high processing capacity, modern technology, and a skilled workforce to position itself as a truly integrated mining company.
With nearly fifty years of active presence, Akmetal has contributed not only to its own growth, but also to the evolution and professionalization of chrome mining in Turkey.
Operations concentrate mainly around the Aladağ district of Adana, a region known for its rich chrome ore formations, providing Akmetal with a strong geological advantage.
With a renewed machinery park, advanced processing facilities, large hauling fleets and automation-supported processes, the company blends traditional mining know-how with modern technology.
Akmetal’s core activity is the extraction and processing of chrome ore. The company employs predominantly open-pit methods supported at times by underground mining in suitable zones.
Akmetal operates across 17 licensed mining zones spanning 20,500 hectares in the Aladağ region. Seven of these fields — including Kızılyüksek, Bozluktepe, Söğüt, Aktaş, Çanakpınarı, Kocaocak and Abdullahderesi — are major production sites, while the others undergo selective production and continuous exploration.
Kızılyüksek is one of Turkey’s most notable chrome ore bodies, extending over 3,200 meters. The site contains extensive low-grade formations that have been studied and developed intensively since the early 2000s.
Combined geological studies and drilling programs have identified over 100 million tons of proven + probable low-grade reserves, making it a long-term strategic resource for Akmetal’s concentration plants.
Bozluktepe supports the feed requirements of multiple facilities and has been active since 2009. The site yields approximately 800,000 tons/year of 7–11% Cr2O3 ore.
Ongoing drilling and geological studies indicate strong continuity of resources, securing its place in Akmetal’s long-term production plan.
Sites such as Kavasak, Çanakpınarı, Abdullahderesi, Darılık, Bozkonuş, Yanıkçam, Söğüt, Akinekdağı, Mendik, Pizgeçmez, Kocaocak and Aktaş employ mostly open-pit mining, with selective underground operations depending on geological conditions.
Several of these fields — especially Söğüt, Yanıkçam and Akinekdağı — produce high-grade lump chrome ore (42–54% Cr2O3).
Sustainable development at Akmetal extends far beyond current mining operations. Extensive geological surveys and drilling programs are carried out across licensed fields to expand and detail existing reserves.
With multiple surface and underground-type drilling rigs, the company has completed more than 110,000 meters of core and RC drilling. These efforts have confirmed over 125 million tons of proven + probable reserves, forming the backbone of Akmetal’s long-term production strategy.
The Kumbükü Concentration Plant is the central hub of Akmetal’s operational chain. Built on 34,000 m² of total area — including 21,000 m² indoor and 13,000 m² outdoor space — the plant boasts a daily processing capacity of 7,000 tons.
Run-of-mine ore with 6–9% Cr2O3 grade is transformed into high-quality 46–48% chromium concentrate through multiple stages of crushing, grinding, classification and gravity separation.
Ore is size-reduced by jaw and cone crushers, then sent to rod mills for primary grinding and ball mills for secondary refinement to achieve ideal particle sizes for enrichment.
Through hydrosizers, wet screens, spirals and multi-deck shaking tables, materials are categorized and enriched based on density and particle behavior.
Tailings are processed via drum separators, thickeners and engineered tailing ponds. Settled water is recycled back into the system, ensuring an environmentally responsible and continuous operation.
Beyond chrome, Akmetal also operates in zinc, barite and coal, enabling a diversified portfolio of metallic and non-metallic minerals.
As one of the flagship mining companies under the Kurmel Group, Akmetal is supported by a strong capital structure, a large in-house fleet of mining and transportation equipment, and a highly experienced technical staff. This integrated structure ensures efficiency, safety and compliance with international standards.
